The US State Department has announced the sale of million worth of advanced surface-to-air missiles to Saudi Arabia.
The State Department said the approval would allow Saudi Arabia to purchase state-of-the-art 280 medium-range M-120C missiles and related equipment.
The State Department said in a statement that the decision to sell the missiles was made to help Saudi Arabia avoid drone strikes.
A State Department spokesman said Saudi Arabia had already succeeded in thwarting drone strikes using missiles that posed a threat to both US and Saudi forces.
The spokesman said there had been an increase in cross-border attacks against Saudi Arabia last year.
A State Department spokesman stressed that the missiles could not be used against ground targets.
The sale comes at a time when US President Joe Biden's administration has been cautious in its support of the Saudis against the Houthis.
