According to Danish media, the FE allegedly gathered intelligence on other officials from Germany, France, Sweden and Norway and handed it over to US intelligence.

Similar allegations of espionage against European politicians surfaced in 2013.

On the other hand, the German Chancellor's spokesman said that Angela Merkel has been informed about the revelations of espionage but neither she nor the President knows anything about it. However, US and Danish intelligence agencies did not respond to a request for comment.

According to media reports, the Danish government knew in 2015 that its intelligence agency was involved in espionage, and the report also found evidence that the United States had used Norwegian, France, Sweden, Germany and the Netherlands through the Danish intelligence service. The Danish government fired the head of the intelligence agency in 2020 last year.

The White House did not deny the allegations, but a spokesman said Merkel's phone call was not being recorded at the time and would not be.
