Russia, as chairman of the NATO Council, proposed a meeting on January 12, 2022, and said Russia was in contact with Russia, the statement said.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian presidential palace Kremlin, said talks between Russia and NATO would be logical.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Gereshko said the date, model, modalities and selection of officials for the delegation were being worked out.

About two weeks ago, Russia presented two draft agreements to the United States and NATO. Russia has demanded that NATO members not deploy troops or weapons in areas where they are considered a threat to Russia, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

The conditions included the point that heavy bombers and warplanes would not be allowed to enter areas beyond their national airspace or waters where they could strike.

At the annual news conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he welcomed talks with the United States in Geneva next month, but expected immediate and concrete action from NATO.

Putin has said he has made it clear to Western nations that any NATO move eastward would be unacceptable to Russia.
