The World Food Program says the global cost of famine relief is now  7 billion, up from  6.6 billion at the beginning of the year.

He warns that traditional forms of funding have grown exponentially.

Families facing severe food insecurity are being forced to make 'devastating choices', such as marrying children early, expelling them from school or feeding them locusts, wild leaves or cactus.

According to the World Food Program, "Media reports from Afghanistan, meanwhile, point to families who are reportedly being forced to sell their children in a desperate attempt to survive."

The UN agency says a severe drought in Afghanistan, coupled with the economic downturn, is bringing families to the brink of disaster, while an estimated 12.4 million people in Syria do not know where their next meal will come from.

Severe hunger is also on the rise in Ethiopia, Haiti, Somalia, Angola, Kenya and Burundi.
