Chinese and US presidents meet despite tensions

A virtual meeting between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping is set to take place on Saturday during the APEC summit, during which the two leaders will discuss the situation posed by the corona virus.

According to the Associated Press, 21 APEC member countries will discuss economic issues.

According to New Zealand's Prime Minister Jacinda Arden, the agenda for this year's forum is to find a way out of the situation caused by the corona virus.

The member countries of the APEC Forum have a total population of 3 billion and they account for 60% of the world's GDP. It extends from Chile to Russia, and from Thailand to Australia.

According to the report, tensions between the major powers could also affect the APEC closed-door meeting as Hong Kong and Taiwan, along with China, are also part of the forum.

Speaking at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit on Thursday, the Chinese president called on all countries in the Asia-Pacific region to work together to tackle common challenges and to avoid falling prey to the Cold War mentality.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that attempts to draw ideological lines or create small circles on geopolitical grounds will fail.
