The #AbbaJaan 'Abba Jan' hashtag is trending on Indian social media, especially Twitter, and people are sharing stories about their fathers with their hashtags.

The perpetrators include people of many faiths, including Muslims and Hindus, and the background to the trend is linked to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's address on Sunday.

Controversial speech by Yogi Adityanath

Yogi Adityanath during a rally in Kashi Nagar accused the previous governments of appeasing Muslims.

He said that the BJP government provided toilets and rations to every poor person without any discrimination.

Yogi said, 'Was this ration available even before 2017? Then the people who called themselves Aba Jan would digest all the rations. Then the rations of Kashi Nagar would reach Nepal and Bangladesh.

"Now no one will be able to swallow the rations of the poor, they will not be able to swallow the rations, they will go to jail," he said.

On social media, many criticized Yogi Adityanath's statement as part of the politics of sectarian polarization.

Abajan is a beautiful word, not abusive

After this, people started posting about their father on Twitter in protest against the statement of Yogi Adityanath.

A post on Twitter said, "Abajan means dear father. It is unfortunate that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath feels that such beautiful words should be used as an insult.

"It is an attempt to snatch the dignity of a section of the society and change the beautiful words. Anyone who loves his father should tell Yogi Adityanath that Abajan is not abusive."

Journalist Alishan Jaffery wrote, "We say 'our father' to show respect and love for our father but some people make fun of him. Be part of this campaign. Share your Abajan photo and story. '

Dr. Qazi Arshad Hussain posted a picture with his father and wrote, "My father spent his life working hard and showed me the way to become a good doctor."

Leaders of various parties have also objected to Yogi Adityanath's controversial statement.

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir and President of the National Conference Omar Abdullah wrote, "I always say that the BJP does not want to contest elections on any agenda other than sectarianism and hatred against Muslims."

"There is a chief minister here who is saying for re-election that Muslims have eaten the rations of Hindus," he said.
