USA: Dozens of people are missing after a 12-story residential building collapsed in Miami

Authorities in the US state of Florida say at least one person has been killed and dozens are missing after a 12-story apartment building collapsed north of Miami.

Authorities in the US state of Florida say at least one person has been killed and dozens are missing after a 12-story apartment building collapsed north of Miami.

According to officials, the number of missing people has risen to an estimated 99.

It is not clear how many people were inside the building at the time of the crash.

"The building is badly damaged," a police official told the media. The distance between the two floors used to be ten feet, now it is only one foot. I'm afraid it's very unlikely that anyone will survive. "

Located in Surf Side, the building was built in 1980 and half of the 130 housing units have been affected by its collapse.

Authorities say migrants from Latin America are missing.

Rescue workers pulled 35 people from the rubble, 10 of whom were given medical treatment and two were hospitalized, officials said.

On Thursday afternoon, Florida Governor Ron de Saints visited the crash site. "Nothing is being shown on TV. In fact, it is very painful. It really hurts to see such a big building being demolished," he said.

"I say to the people of Florida, whatever help you want, whatever the federal government can do, we are at your service, we will be with you," Biden said.

It looked like 9/11

Rescue workers were seen using a crane to help reach residents in nearby apartments.

A passerby was walking with his brothers and their dog when he heard the building collapse.

"We heard a really big explosion, we thought it was a motorcycle, we saw a cloud of dust on the winding road," he told CBS Miami.

He added, 'We were asking (what's going on?) We approached him and put shirts on our faces and the security guard came out, we asked (what happened?) And he said the building collapsed. ۔

An eyewitness to the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks told CNN that it looked exactly like 9/11.

Santo Miguel, 50, said he woke up to a phone call from his wife, who was caring for a disabled woman on the ninth floor of one of the three buildings in the Zampin Towers.

Miguel told the Miami Herald, "(His wife) said he heard a big explosion. It felt like an earthquake. ”His wife was among those rescued.

"The whole building shook and then I looked out the window but I didn't see anything," said one of the occupants of the building. I thought it was something like a storm. "

"When the mud cleared, I saw two-thirds of the buildings fall to the ground from behind," he added.
