Koh-i-Noor diamond return petition set for hearing

The petition filed for the return of Koh-i-Noor Hira to Pakistan has been fixed for hearing in the Lahore High Court.

Justice Shahid Waheed of Lahore High Court will hear the petition filed for return of Koh-i-Noor diamond on July 1.

The petitioner alleges that the British had snatched the diamond from Maharaja Ranjit Singh's grandson Dilip Singh and taken it to Britain.

The appellant contends that when Queen Elizabeth II ascended the British throne in 1953, the Koh-i-Noor diamond snatched from Dilip Singh was part of her crown.

The court held that Noorhira Mountain is the cultural heritage of Punjab and Queen Elizabeth has no right to it.

The court has been asked to take back the Koh-i-Noor diamond from the British government and bring it to Pakistan.

Keep in mind that India is also demanding back from Britain all the artefacts, including Koh-i-Noor, which were returned during the colonial era.

When Queen Elizabeth II paid an official visit to India in 1997 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of her independence, the Indian people, as well as Indians living in the UK, demanded the return of the diamond. Today, Koh-i-Noor adorns the crown of Queen Elizabeth II
