Israeli Foreign Minister arrives in Egypt for permanent ceasefire in Gaza

Israeli Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi arrived in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, 13 years ago to discuss a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli Foreign Minister will meet with his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shukri.

Gabi Ashkenazi tweeted in three different Arabic, English and Hebrew languages: "This is the first official visit of an Israeli Foreign Minister in 13 years."

"We will discuss with Hamas a permanent ceasefire, humanitarian aid and reconstruction in Gaza," he added.

Meanwhile, senior Egyptian security officials confirmed to AFP on Sunday that Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh would also be in Cairo for talks, but gave no further details.

Egypt's intelligence chief, Abbas Kamil, is expected to visit Israel and the Palestinian territories on Sunday, officials said.

It should be noted that in early May, after 11 days of fighting between Israel and Hamas, a ceasefire agreement was reached. Egypt acted as a mediator between the two.
