Khidr Khan, a Pakistani national, has been nominated for the post of US Commissioner for International Religious Freedom

President Biden has nominated Khidr Khan, a Pakistani-born lawyer, for the post of commissioner of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom in recognition of his services to US troops and religious freedom.

 Khidr Khan is the 'Gold Star' father of Captain Humayun, a former US soldier who was killed in a car bombing in Iraq. His son, Capt. Humayun, was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his bravery and sacrifice for the country, and was buried with full military honors at Arlington Military Cemetery near Washington D.C. had gone.

 The White House on Friday acknowledged Khizr Khan's services in highlighting freedom of religion as a key component of human dignity, as one of the founders of the US Constitution Literacy and National Unity Project.

In addition to Khidr Khan, the White House has appointed Rashid Hussain as ambassador for international religious freedom and Debra Lapse Ted as special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitic events. 

Khidr Khan was among those who backed Biden's Democratic Party as a presidential candidate for the 2020 presidential election. Khidr Khan garnered worldwide attention in 2016 when he sharply criticized then-presidential candidate Donald Trump for his statement on religious freedom at a Democratic convention. 

Speaking at a Democratic Party convention in Philadelphia, Pakistan, Khidr Khan, a Pakistani-American, said his 27-year-old son, Capt. Humayun Khan, had been killed in a 2004 car bombing in Iraq. He said his son sacrificed his life for America.

 In those days, Donald Trump made some harsh statements about Muslims during his election campaign, including a proposal to ban Muslims from entering the United States, which was also voiced by some Muslims. Khidr Khan took a copy of the US Constitution from his coat pocket and said that he could give it to Donald Trump. 

Standing on the stage with his wife, Khidr Khan waved a copy of the constitution and said, "Look at the words of protection of freedom and equality in it."
