Pakistan's medal wait at the Olympics has become even longer. Athlete Arshad Nadeem, who made it to the finals of the javelin throw, failed to win a medal despite his impressive performance.
He was the only athlete in the top five to throw the javelin four times in his six innings beyond the 80-meter mark, but his best throw was far behind the best throw in the 84.62 final.
India's Neeraj Chopra won the final of the javelin throw event. He has become the second individual gold medalist in the history of India.
Earlier in 2008, Abhinav Bandra had won a gold medal for India in shooting.
Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem competed well with the best athletes in the world. However, his throw was better than the throw of four more players. Thus, like weightlifter Talha Talib, he also managed to make a place in the top five, but Pakistan could not win a medal.
Achieving the fifth position among the 12 finalists is no less than an honor for this athlete from Mian Channu.
If gold medalist Neeraj Chopra threw a long throw of 87.58, then Arshad Nadeem's best throw was 84.62.
Both silver and bronze medals in the event went to Czech athletes. Jacob Weldich (86.67) and Vettslav Yazli (85.44) finished second and third, respectively.
While there was a gap of less than one meter between Arshad Nadeem and the bronze medalist, there was also Julian Weber of Germany in the middle who finished fourth with his best performance of the season.
The German athlete threw 85.30 meters in the final. He was the only player in the top five who did not commit a single foul in six innings. All the other players, including India's Neeraj Chopra, twice forced the line referee to raise the red flag.
Arshad Nadeem's final was seen all over Pakistan. While in some places large screens were also installed for it.
People on the social networking site Twitter praised his performance and called the 24-year-old athlete the star of the future.
